Window Installation 101

Not a job for the weekend novice

Window Installation ImageInstalling a set of vinyl replacement windows is not a task for a beginner. If you live in the Houston area (or anyplace in Texas, really), you understand how critical it is for windows to fit properly for maximum energy efficiency. That’s not even mentioning keeping out the allergens that float around in Houston air.

An improper window installation can physically distort the window frame and result in a window that won’t open and close properly, or can let in air and water. A ham-handed installation can also result in a job that’s just plain ugly, with chewed-up drywall or windowsills, messy caulk or worse!

Here are the steps that our windows installers take:

  1. We take precise measurements and adhere to the “measure twice -- cut once” rule. New houses (and even older houses) can have window openings that are out-of-square, which makes an accurate measurement absolutely crucial to a proper replacement window installation. Since vinyl replacement windows are all custom-made, they can’t be returned…so proper measurements are absolutely critical!
  2. We remove the old window, complete with sashes, weights, pulleys (if present) and chains. We take care to leave the old window stops in place, as they will be needed for seating the new windows.
  3. The next step is to carefully lay a bead of caulk along the bottom edge of where the replacement window will go. We mark the sill angle, then put the header in place at the top of the window and caulk its top.
  4. The window is then put in place in the opening; if the opening isn’t square, shims may be used to ensure a good fit. Mounting screws are put in along the side jambs, taking care not to screw them in so tightly that they deform the jamb itself.
  5. The sashes are tested for a good fit and smooth operation. If they are sticky or balky, most replacement windows include adjustment screws in the side jambs to fine-tune the installation. Manufacturer’s specs vary from brand to brand, so we take care to follow manufacturer’s recommendations.
  6. The inside of the window is then caulked as needed, inside stops are re-installed and the windowsills and surrounding area are cleaned up.

Many a homeowner has taken on the job of installing vinyl replacement windows, only to wind up with a big mess. Unless you’ve got some experience in this area, it’s probably best to leave it up to the professionals.
